Could things be different? At the heart of the engine which drives our emission of 30 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, is a global economy. And it seems as though it is imperative that this economy should continue to grow indefinitely. But is that possible? Is that feasible? Is that desirable? This TED talk by Tim Jackson is a little off-topic for this blog, but I felt moved by it.
I was moved by Tim’s sincerity and by his asking of very simple questions. I felt moved by his relative lack of charisma, and by his straightforwardness. I really don’t know how to make things different – I am very bad at imagining the future. But a world where the only way to reduce carbon emissions is a global recession and mass unemployment is a pretty poor achievement for humankind. Surely, things could be different?
